A month in Cape Town

All four take long stays. Two of them are actually built for it, and the difference is not the one you would guess from the listings.

For three nights, almost nothing about an apartment matters. For a month, three things do: whether you can wash your own clothes without leaving the building, whether you can work properly at a desk, and whether you will be too hot or too cold in it. On those three the four separate sharply.

The most keenly priced of the four

The value pick, and 553 m from 220 Loop — the same street, five minutes apart, which matters if two couples are travelling together. But it has no air conditioning and no heating, and it is a 33 m² studio. A month in it in February would be a long month.

Not for a month

No laundry in the apartment, and none in the building. There is a launderette nearby, which is a weekly errand rather than a load on a Sunday.

It is the best of the four for a conference, and the weakest for a month. The pool, gym and mezzanine café downstairs are real, though, and would carry a longer stay further than the apartment alone suggests.

The nicest of the four to spend a fortnight in and the most expensive way to do your washing. If the stay is a holiday rather than a relocation, that trade may well be worth making.

All four are set up for work

Every one of the four has a dedicated workspace and fast fibre. That is deliberate rather than a coincidence — three of the four also have lockbox self check-in, so an odd arrival time is not a problem.

Charlie & the Chairman goes furthest, and it is worth knowing even though the apartment itself is the wrong pick for a month: the mezzanine has a café and lounge with a coffee bar, long tables, power at the seats and meeting rooms off it, a lift ride from the door.

Cleaning is on check-in and check-out only — there is no mid-stay clean as standard on any of the four. Charlie is the one exception, where housekeeping can be booked for two hours a day, Monday to Saturday, at extra cost. Worth planning for on a stay of a month.
